New England is a region of   America  that spans six states – Rhode Island, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut and New Hampshire – and it makes an excellent destination to visit on  America   holidays .

To get the most out of your time in the area, you may want to opt for a fly/drive USA package to enable you  travel  freely once you land in the US and see as many sights of interest as possible on your New England  holiday .

But where should you begin? Connecticut could be the perfect place to start your trip and immerse yourself in the atmosphere and scenery of New England.

As its name suggests, the early European settlers noticed similarities between the region and England, with many places even named after English towns, cities or counties – such as Cheshire, Essex, Glastonbury and Bristol.

One of the reasons that the area earned its name is because of its stunning countryside and you will certainly find many places in Connecticut where you can appreciate the great outdoors.

If you fancy a sedate stroll, why not head to the Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens in Hartford? The grounds are full of beautifully-kept rose bushes, which come into bloom in the summer and promise to provide a picturesque setting.

There are also numerous trails around the park, so you can follow one that suits your mood, whether you want to admire the flowers or are keen to spot some local wildlife.

Another pastime that is a great option if you want to get out and about is golf – and Connecticut certainly has some excellent greens for you to tee off on.

If you are keen to see the region from a different perspective, you may want to visit Avon, where you can take a kayak or canoe tour down the Farmington River. There is nothing more relaxing than drifting along a beautiful waterway at your own pace, enjoying the scenery that rolls by.

Of course, you could also choose to take an excursion that allows you to learn about some of the state’s literary characters – with Huckleberry Finn one of the most famous creations to come out of Connecticut.

Another option on your New England fly drive holidays is to learn a little about Connecticut’s history. From the Native Americans to its African American and seafaring communities, you will find an attraction detailing the past of each one.

Glastonbury is a good place to begin for some localised history, with its Museum on the Green. Here you can find out about the Native Americans who once called the region home, as well as looking at the development of industry in New England.

You will also be able to view portraits of some of the town’s most prominent citizens during a visit here.

Next on your list for a good overview of the state’s past should be the Museum of Connecticut History in its capital Hartford. Here you can peruse exhibits of firearms from various periods in time, as well as being able to see the Connecticut Royal Charter.

And you should make sure that your journey into the state’s history does not neglect its African American community. The city is home to a Heritage Trail, which will take you to some of the most important sites and buildings for the African Americans living in the area.

Connecticut has a stretch of coastline as well as its inland regions, so you should ensure you include a stop off here on your itinerary for your American fly drive break.

A great place to find out more about the seafaring history of the state is to visit Mystic. Here you will be able to enjoy the leading maritime museum in the US – Mystic Seaport.

This recreation of a 19th century port is a fantastic place to spend a day. In its harbour you will be able to see vessels from years gone by moored up to the pontoons, while craftsmen and women will show off their skills to visitors.

When you explore the attraction, you will also find there is a planetarium here, as well as a substantial collection of maritime photography.

Meanwhile, the Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration is another place you must visit on any Connecticut break, offering you the opportunity to see some of the creatures that live in and by the world’s oceans.

South America Tours: Extreme Adventure

[ad_1]

If you’re looking for some thrill seeking action, a South   America  vacation should be at the top of your  travel  list. Cheaper than Africa, more exotic than North America, and wilder than Europe, few continents can claim the diversity, accessibility, and abundance of gasp-inducing activities that South America offers. Here are several adventures to check out, if you dare.

Mount Roraima. Ever seen the movie UP? The wonderfully mysterious and majestic place the characters dream about visiting actually exists. It is in Venezuela and is called Mount Roraima. It is a remarkably massive plateau surrounded by 400 foot sheer drop-offs. Getting there is difficult and should only be attempted by the most adventurous traveler, as it requires a several day trek through misty mountains. And of course, just traveling in Venezuela, regardless of where, can be challenging.

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The Inca Trail trek is much more traveled than the trek to Mount Roraima, but that doesn’t make it any less amazing. This trek follows the original path used by the Inca civilization to get to Machu Picchu, which back in the 1500s was an isolated retreat for Inca royalty. The high altitude requires at least a day to adjust to in Cuzco before setting off, and trekkers can choose to carry all their own supplies (such as tent, sleeping bag, and equipment) or hire a porter to carry them instead.

Biking in Bolivia. Despite being smack in the middle of the continent, Bolivia tends to be overlooked by travelers and tourists alike. This interesting highland country however has several hidden gems, especially for thrill seekers. Biking down what was once the World’s Most Dangerous Road is of course exciting, but a bit safer today because most car and truck traffic now (thankfully) takes a different route. Visiting the salt flats in Bolivia is another extremely unique experience, although biking across them isn’t recommended and would be nearly impossible.

Amazon adventuring. The Amazon covers parts of many countries, but the Amazon River runs primarily though Peru and Brazil. The most adventurous way to visit this region is to travel like the locals on slow moving river boats. An Amazon cruise is the trip a lifetime, but if you’re looking for something rougher and more affordable, hop on a local river boat. You can opt for a journey anywhere from 3 to 15 days. Be sure to plan ahead and pack proper supplies, because life on a river boat is pretty basic.

Medieval Markets in Germany

[ad_1]

At various parts of the year a number of towns and cities will have a small medieval market. In late November the city of Nuremberg has the ‘Historischer Katharinenmarkt’. Like all these affairs this particular medieval market is great fun. All the stall holders are in medieval dress which is usually brown and beige woolen clothing often with a hooded cloak and a rope like belt, the recreation society members are all in military attire from the middles ages, chainmail and skirts with swords or spears, they tend to congregate around a wooden fire sitting on crudely made wooden chairs and talking and laughing in a way reminiscent of what it must have been like many centuries ago for the local lord’s retainers to be overseeing a market of the day.

There is usually entertainment at these events, in this case a juggler dressed as a jester and a band, in troubadour outfits, playing lively renditions of medieval tunes on medieval instruments – the drum and bag pipe. Such markets usually have stalls selling mead, monastery brewed ales and berry wines, tipples not often found at beer festivals the rest of the year.

The stalls are also an interesting feature of these markets, although some are the familiar wooden huts of the more common beer fests, most are colourful tents, more like pavilions, in fact, of the type we are used to seeing in Robin Hood movies of the 1960s from America, with pointed tops and flowing sides. Many of the wares on offer at these stalls are also surprising. There is usually a fortune teller at the market who does palmistry and tarot cards; you can get a scroll with your family name and its history, or buy a hand-crafted bow or a blacksmith forged sword. A stall selling armour is often present at these fairs as are stalls selling medieval costumes and woolen cloaks. There are herb and spice stalls, a bakery selling freshly baked bread from an on site wood stoked oven and a stall selling drinking horns.

Children are also catered for with one or two stalls selling toy wooden swords, bows and shields and even knight helmets. At this particular market there was a large pavilion set up in the Turkish style in which you can drink beer or tea and smoke on water pipes all whilst sat on large cushions at a low set Arabic metal filigreed coffee table. Of course bars abound, what would a medieval market be without stalls to purchase a flagon of ale (some even serve drinks in pewter mugs) or have something to eat. At many of these occasions they roast an entire ox or goat on a spit and slice the meat directly from the roasting beast.

During the market a parade takes place in which the recreation medieval society marches with banners fluttering in the wind, weapons held high, and musicians playing marching music.

Medieval markets have been part of the annual festivities in many German towns for many years and are only recently starting to be held in other countries. The whole thing is an entertaining day out for the whole family and if you get the opportunity I would highly recommend you go to see one.

Travel Guide For Family Holidays in Paris

[ad_1]

There are the obvious sights to see when on holiday in Paris with the family, such as the Eiffel Tower, but the there are numerous beautiful gardens situated throughout the city that are a great way to relax with a picnic and let the children enjoy themselves on the playgrounds.

Many gardens have pony or donkey rides along with merry-go-rounds such as the famous old one at the Jardin du Luxembourg, which is a great thrill for the young children, but for the harder to please teenagers there are specific areas for skating and even activities like table tennis at the Parc Andre-Citroen.

During the summer months Paris comes alive with lots of different festivals, fetes and shows which take place all over the city, and from puppet shows to fairs through to open air jazz concerts, there is going to be something to keep everyone amused.

Yet how about going to the beach? Well Paris may not be near to the beach, but every year they create a beach scene on the banks of the River Seine called the Paris Plage where they bring in tonnes of sand and create activities such as volleyball courts and even have a floating swimming pool.

Thinking of the River Seine, why not take a trip down the river on one of the traditional bateau mouches long-boats and see the famous monuments like Notre Dame cathedral, and you could even opt to have lunch or dinner on board, yet the evening is a fantastic experience with the bridges and the Paris landmarks all lit up along the route.

Rather than using the metro, younger children would often prefer a bus ride and you could choose a site seeing tour on an open double decker bus that goes around the city, which is a lot more fun. One particular firm called the l’Open Tour buses has four different routes where you can even get to see places like the Sacre-Coeur Basilica.

You cannot forget about walking along the Champs Elysees with its famous shops, but when those little legs get tired, the Häagen-Dazs ice cream house will be a delight for all members of the family.

Ok, so you would like to get out of the city for the day. Well how about a day trip to a Safari Park at the Parc Zoologique de Thoiry, which also has a beautiful chateau and a unique interactive maze, which is the only one of its kind in the world. Also if you are into outdoor activities then there are a couple of great places such as the Base Regionale de Loisirs de Saint Quentin en Yvelines for activities like fishing, golf, sailing, a wave pool, quad biking, karting and even a tree top adventure centre called the Paris Ouest Aventure.

And of course there are the theme parks like Disneyland Paris and Parc Asterix, which we have all heard about, but what about the Mer de Sable, which has a wild west theme where you can see shows, yet if you prefer wildlife rather than wild rides, you can watch eagles in flight along with tree top walks at the Espace Rambouillet. France Miniature is another theme park designed as a map of France showing numerous monuments and landmarks in miniature, but from here you may even wish to take a short trip to the famous Chateau de Versailles, where you can experience an equestrian show or fountain show on specific days during the summer months.

But what about in bad weather, we hear you asking. Well, Paris is a city that has it all, with a wide variety of entertainment and activities available for all ages. You could think about a visit to the Cite de Sciences and experience the Geode movie dome or different interactive experiments, then venture into the L’Argonaute submarine that sits just outside.

How about a circus? This is often a good family entertainment option and Paris has two main circuses called the Cirque Diana Moreno Bormann and the Cirque d’Hiver Bouglione, and you can even book trapeze lessons or see shows at the Club Med World, but for the older members of your family, Club Med World also has a nightclub.

There are so many different options for shows, like magic at the Double Fond or a horse show at the Theatre Equestre Zingaro, but perhaps an aquarium would be of more interest to you and your family and in the centre of Paris there is the incredible CineAqua that has the largest viewing screen in the world.

PlayMobil is a great place for young children where they can actually play with different PlayMobil toys set out in different themes like a castle, or for older children and teenagers the, Aquaboulevard leisure centre will keep everyone entertained with the flumes, wave pool and jacuzzi’s etc, but don’t worry you could in the restaurant watching them!

You have no doubt gathered by now that Paris has so many activities on offer and we are only scratching the surface, but hopefully this has provided you with more of an insight into a city that caters for all ages, so you can plan your holiday and get the most out of it.

Car Repair and Maintenance For Winter Holiday Travel

[ad_1]

As autumn begins to turn into winter, many people’s thoughts turn towards holiday travel plans. More and more people decide to drive to their destinations and are all too often unprepared for the toll the journey can take on their cars. Tackling a road trip without first giving your automobile a checkup is asking for trouble. Even if you don’t think there is anything wrong with your car, your mechanic can often uncover small issues that can be repaired before they become large, expensive problems – or, worse, leave you stranded.

You may only think you need an oil change and to have your tires checked, but a professional mechanic also checks several other things to keep you on the road and not the roadside. In addition to checking the balance and rotation of your tires, they will check all of the fluid levels in your engine, as well as all of the filters, in order to ensure that everything is running safely and efficiently. The air pressure in your tires will be checked to help improve fuel efficiency. Any small leaks or pressure problems can usually be addressed the same day. A good mechanic will also make sure your windshield wiper blades are working properly, and that headlights, brake lights, and turn signals illuminate as they should.

Some mechanics will automatically check your brake system, while others view it as a separate service. It is important to make sure that the brakes are checked and working properly before hitting the road. Snow, ice, rain, and high winds can all be a problem when driving, and your tires and brakes are your first defense against accidents. Holiday travel also usually means holiday traffic, so making sure your radiator is functioning as it should will prevent overheating. If you travel from a mild climate to a colder climate, you will want to make sure the heater is working as it should. If you’re journeying south or west, you may find you need air conditioning even as late in the year as November or December.

A typical tune-up checks your spark plugs and intake valves, in addition to everything previously mentioned. It can help you get better performance out of your vehicle, saving you money at the gas pump. Your mechanic will also test your battery in order to make sure a change in temperature won’t leave you without a running car. You may find that a new battery is needed before you find yourself on the side of the road during inclement weather, saving you a great deal of trouble. You may also consider asking to have all of the fuses in your car checked. Your mechanic will give you a list of his findings, let you know needs to be repaired and provide an estimate of costs. A thorough mechanic will also tell you if there are any small issues that can be overlooked safely for a short while.

Traveling for the holidays can be fun and exciting, and with a few precautions, as well as a thorough check-up with your mechanic, it can also be a safe and trouble-free journey.

Travel by Car Across America

[ad_1]

More and more people are getting in their cars and driving across the USA or across Canada on a vacation trip that they may have planned on doing for years. The price of gas has been somewhat of a deterrent, however the price of fuel is going up regardless of whether you drive, fly, take the train or the bus!  Traveling  by car allows you to see so much more that we are convinced that this is the best and the only way to  travel  and see the various sites across  America . One of the things we discovered is that there are so many different interesting things to see and do, that we are already planning to do this same trip all over again.

We started from eastern Canada and traveled through Windsor and Detroit and headed towards St Louis. Everyone should see the beautiful arch that marks the entrance to St Louis at least once! Next we traveled further south towards Texas. We bypassed a lot of states since we had a plan in mind. We wanted to see the Texas panhandle and into Amarillo, Texas. What we got was miles and miles of scorched earth! The fires that spread across Texas have to be really seen to be believed. Miles and miles of blackened grass really tells you just how immense these fires can be. We were a bit disappointed in Amarillo, so we moved on to Roswell, New Mexico.

Roswell, New Mexico, of course is home to the Roswell UFO museum. This museum got its start with the cover-up of the crash of a UFO in 1947 by the US military or so it is claimed. This is a must see stop if you are interested at all in UFO’s.

Next on our itinerary was the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. With over 250 square miles of gypsum sand, so white it is blinding and the kids toboggan down the 60-foot sand dunes as if they were huge snowdrifts. This is another must see adventure.

There are many things to see in Arizona. We chose the Tucson area for this trip and spent time around Sabino Canyon, Tubac, Nogales, and Bensen. A combination of hiking, shopping for arts and crafts and a little star gazing at Mount Kitts kept us busy for over five days. The last part of our trip heading south west was a stay in Laughlin, Nevada, Las Vegas, Nevada and Palm Springs.

Laughlin, Nevada is on the Colorado River and we took advantage of the water taxis that will take you along the river to the various casino hotels. There are boat cruises and a line up of great entertainment. This area of Nevada is definitely a good deal. Prices for rooms are reasonable as are the meals.

Next we visited Las Vegas. Las Vegas is a gambling mecca with over 100,000 rooms available and millions of people visiting every year for a combination of good times, great food and entertainment and of course a little gambling.

Palm Springs is a gem in the California desert. Nestled in a valley, protected from the wind and rain, you can count on great weather over 300 days a year.

We spent over a month traveling throughout the US, concentrating on the southwest. The only reservations we made were in Las Vegas and Palm Springs. As seasoned travelers we find that a cross-country car trip such as this is best done in the spring or in the fall when all of the kids are in school and lineups are relatively short.

Next year we plan to do it all again, traveling to the north west of the USA and then head south to California.

Avoid Conflicts When You Travel For The Holidays

[ad_1]

It can be great fun to spend the holidays with your family and friends, but there always seems to be a few people that you wish to avoid as well. Planning ahead can help you to avoid conflicts when you travel for the holidays. Remember that each person is entitled to their own thoughts and opinions. Agree to disagree on issues that pertain to politics and various types of controversial issues.

Everyone should take care of their own children during a gathering for the holidays. This is to prevent issues that arise when different parenting styles are in play. Make sure your children understand before you travel for the holidays that you expect them to follow the same rules they have at home regardless of what other children there will be allowed to do. This will help to prevent confusion and frustration for everyone involved in the gathering for the holidays.

In order to ensure everyone has a great time let those that will be in attendance help to place the events. Make sure someone is in charge of activities for the children to enjoy too. Take a look at the span of age groups that will be present at the event and either come up with activities for all of them to enjoy together or break them up into groups based on age.

Make sure everyone gets to take on a role for the holiday gathering that they will enjoy. This way the overall event will be a success and everyone will look forward to attending. Don’t leave certain people to clean up from the dinner or the activities just because you assume that is what they want to do. Knowing what your role is before you travel for the holidays allows you to be prepared for it.

Food is a common part of any holiday gathering but it can be a problem for some people. Before you travel for the holidays make sure the host is aware of any special foods you will need to have or to avoid. They can even offer dishes without meat for those that are on a vegetarian diet. Some people have an allergy to peanut oil or other foods though that need to be taken into consideration. Don’t wait until you arrive to tell them as it can mean foods they spent time preparing will have to be thrown out.

If you have an unresolved issue with someone that will be at the family gathering you should attempt to contact them prior to the event. This will help both of you to relieve the tension and anxiety over the situation. If it is something that can’t be resolved then ask them to agree to put your differences aside for the sake of everyone else that will be in attendance.

It doesn’t mean you have to become best friends at the event but don’t waste your energy being in conflict with the individual. Focus on the good memories that you can create for your family during the holidays instead. Too many families end up with parties missing for the gathering because they don’t want to attend if someone else is. Taking the high road so that everyone can enjoy their holiday more is an amazing gift you can give to them.

Travel Tips – Making Travel Easier During the Holidays

[ad_1]

If you are planning a trip for the holidays to a destination that is not out of the country, you still are going to run into a lot of things that could make for a stressful trip and it’s always a good idea for you to make sure that you have a good plan for your trip, no matter where you travel to. Making sure that you plan well in advance is going to help you lower the stress of traveling during any holiday.

One of the first things you should probably consider is to try and pack as light as you can. If it is all possible you should try and just take a carry on bag with you and try to avoid a lot of excess luggage that needs to be checked in and in most cases will cost you extra for each additional bag these days. It is also a good idea if you do some research by going online and checking the airlines website to see what they do and don’t allow you to bring on board.

If it’s during Christmas and you have gifts that you need to bring with you, you can save yourself a lot of stress and money if you simply mail the gifts a head of time to where your final destination is. A lot of airlines don’t allow wrapped gifts on board and you may have to check them in like luggage. There also is the chance they could get lost or even stolen.

When picking out the dates of your travel, you really need to do this smartly. Some people who do not travel often don’t realize that the days before the actual holiday and the days right after are usually the days that the airlines charge more money. If you can wait to fly out on the actual day of the holiday you will save money because the air fare is usually cheaper on the holiday itself.

Don’t take your own car to the airport so you can avoid the outrageous prices they will charge you to keep your car there. You should either arrange for family or friends to take you and pick you up or just take public transportation instead. This will save a lot of money and stress.

You might also want to see if your airline gives you the opportunity to be able to arrive at a regional airport that might be just outside of your destination instead of flying into a large airport that will be over crowded and more than likely cost more to fly to.

Early morning flights, as much as they may be inconvenient for you are probably the best times to fly because they are usually cheaper and the crowds are not as bad. Early flights also generally have less of a chance of being delayed. You also might consider a non-stop flight as well because they are delayed less than other flights.

It’s always a good idea to try to come and check in as early as you possibly can. The earlier you check in the shorter the line will be. These lines can be extremely long and even some flights might end up being over booked and you could end up having to take a different flight. So get there early and bring something with you like music or a good book for your wait after checking in.

Make sure you bring plenty of snacks with you, bring extra batteries for anything you have that requires them. Make sure that what you are wearing is really comfortable. If you are on any medications make sure they are not packed away and are with you. Smile, keep with the spirit of the holiday at all times and everything should be OK.
